A sudden downpour followed by a hailstorm and heavy gales uprooted the trees along the Chittoor-Puttur highway at several stretches in Sri Rangaraja Puram mandal on Monday evening.

Heavy rain lashed the region from Kothapalli Mitta to Ksheera Sagaram of GD Nellore and SR Puram mandals. At Nelavai village, several trees were uprooted and fell across the highway, blocking the traffic for several hours. The police deployed earthmovers to clear the blockades.

Meanwhile, the hailstorm led to plummeting heat conditions in the eastern mandals of Chittoor. It is also expected to have damaged the mango crop in some villages. The power supply was also interrupted in a dozen villages across the SR Puram mandal.
